Can you feel the energy in the air? The anticipation is almost palpable! The hype, the players, the half-time show, the victorious team.… There is much to be excited about! Oh, wait … you thought I meant the Super Bowl.
And yes, that is today too, but before that: It's Preach Off! A service of competitive preaching, laughter, and fun, reminding us that we can learn about God in an adventurous and enjoyable way.
Today, before the festivities begin, take a few moments to sit quietly. Set aside all distractions, close your eyes, and take a few slow, deep breaths. With each exhale, give God your worries and concerns. Allow his peace to wash over you, and take time to contemplate God’s great love for you.
Spend time reading the following verses and contemplating the discussion questions that follow the prayer. Consider recording your responses in a journal, whether digital or analog. It's a great way to be able to look back on the adventure God has you on.
Jeremiah 29:10-14
10 This is what the Lord says: “You will be in Babylon for seventy years. But then I will come and do for you all the good things I have promised, and I will bring you home again. 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. 14 I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and will bring you home again to your own land.”
Finally, join us for Preach Off! Bring a friend you can introduce to Jesus and the life-changing adventure with him.
Prayer:
Lord, you are a God of love and joy, who desires a relationship with me. Life with you is meant to be a grand adventure, not just a list of rules to follow. I am thankful for the reminder that you have good plans in store for me. Help me to look for you with my whole heart, knowing I will find you if I do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
