The Generosity of God

Weekend Series: Scary Things God Asks Us to Do

As Christians, one of the first things we learn about is the love and grace of God. However, how often do we deeply think about the magnitude of that love and grace? To our human minds, it can be difficult to comprehend the boundless generosity of God. Throughout my faith journey, I have learned that God is loving and generous toward us—not because of what we can do—but because of who he is.

God has shown us his love and generosity since the beginning of time. One example of this can be found in the Book of Genesis. God promised Abraham that he would bless him and make a nation out of his descendants if Abraham would fully trust him with everything in his life (Genesis 22:17).

Abraham was faithful to God throughout his entire life, and God fulfilled his promise through the creation of the nation of Israel. Abraham patiently trusted God, even when life got difficult. God desires for us to have the same patience and trust in his promises. God has proven to his people throughout all generations that we can wholeheartedly trust him—he will fulfill every promise that he has made.

Hebrews 6:13-15
13 For example, there was God’s promise to Abraham. Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in his own name, saying:

14 “I will certainly bless you, and I will multiply your descendants beyond number.”

Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised.

God’s faithfulness holds as true today as it did back then. God does not want us to place our trust in him or share our blessings with him because we feel obligated to do so. Rather, as Christ followers, our trust and generosity come from the love that overflows from our hearts when we accept him as Lord.

From the moment we accept God’s gift of salvation, our hearts and spirits are transformed. When we become a new creation, we want to place our trust in God and obey him because we have tasted his faithfulness and goodness. It is when we realize God’s endless love and generosity toward us that we can fully trust him with everything we have—because of who he is and what he did for us on the cross.

Give to God, confidently trusting him with every aspect of your life.

Questions:
How have you seen God’s goodness and generosity in your own life?

What is God calling you to trust him with now in your daily life?

Next Steps:
This week, pray that God opens your eyes to what you need to trust him with in your own life and ask that he provide you with the faith to do so.

Each day this week, write down something that you are giving up to God.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thanks for your boundless love and grace. I praise you for who you are and the promises that you have fulfilled. Help me to share your love and to trust you in all areas of my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Series Theme Verse:

Matthew 6:33
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
