Picture this: Jesus enters Jerusalem to shouts of praise and waving palm branches. The people celebrate him with joy—yet he knows what's coming. In just a few days, some of these same voices will turn to shouts of "Crucify him." He knows betrayal, brutality, and the cross lie ahead.
If anyone had a reason to be angry in these moments, it was Jesus.
Jesus knew all the events that would take place as he entered Jerusalem—and still, he did not sin. He chose to love, serve, and follow the path laid out for him.
Today is Palm Sunday, the start of Holy Week. As we look ahead to next weekend's Easter and resurrection celebrations, let's not rush past the weight of this moment. Let's remember what we've learned about Jesus during the Angry Jesus series and what he did – or didn't do – with his anger.
In moments of frustration or hurt, may we pause, pray, and react differently by using the examples Jesus so clearly displayed.
1 Peter 2:21 NIV
To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
Discussion Questions:
Ice breaker: Palm Sunday marks a moment of celebration. Have you ever been celebrated or cheered on but felt pressured or knew a tough moment was ahead? Share this experience and how you handled it.
How would our communities change if everyone followed Jesus' example in handling anger or mistreatment?
Read Luke 19:28-40: As you reflect on Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, what areas of your life need to "welcome" him fully? How does the contrast between the joyful crowd and the Pharisees' disapproval speak to how we can sometimes react to Jesus?
How can you slow down this week and reflect more deeply on Jesus' journey through Holy Week?
Reflect on a time you were tempted to react in anger or frustration. How can you step back, pray, and respond with the same grace and love Jesus displayed?
Prayer:
Jesus, I am so grateful for your love. Whether I’m in a state of joy, frustration, or hardship – I want to follow your example. Please guide me to live with the same grace, patience, and obedience you showed. I love you, I trust you, and I worship you. Amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Hebrews 4:15
This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.
