Weekend Series: Bad Boys of the Bible

DreamTeam Writer: Kelly Pagel

Have you ever pretended to be something you’re not? Whether done out of blatant dishonesty, or deception so people might be impressed and like you, either way it falls flat. And in the case of Annanias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11), faking was fatal.

Like most people, their root motivation for faking was focusing on self—making themselves look good—rather than focusing on God.

By shifting our attention to our amazing God and who we are in him, we relieve the pressure of feeling like we need to be impressive. We realize our only purpose is to bring honor to God (1 Corinthians 10:31).

This week, invite the Lord to open your eyes to any areas where you may have a tendency to respond with deception and dishonesty. Then consider who God is and how much he loves you. Center your thoughts on his magnificence and glory.

Set aside any distractions, close your eyes, take a few slow, deep breaths, and approach the Lord with humility. Consider recording your responses in a journal, whether digital or hard copy. It's a wonderful way to be able to look back on the adventure God has you on.

Prayer:
Holy and magnificent God, I come before you today, not because I am worthy, but because of Christ’s sacrifice. Without him I am nothing, but through him, as your adopted child, I am chosen, loved, redeemed, forgiven, and precious. Lord, when I am tempted to be dishonest or deceptive, help me turn my eyes to you, remembering your incredible love, and instead respond out of trust and obedience. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Series Theme Verse:
Psalm 37:3-4
3 Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. 4 Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.
