Weekend Series: Bad Boys of the Bible

Have you ever let a problem with someone fester? Generally when that happens, things end poorly. This was certainly the case for King David’s son Absalom. Rather than humbly address the issues he faced and trust God, he took matters into his own hands, and it didn’t end well.

This week, as we continue our series, Bad Boys of the Bible, with Absalom’s story, we are reminded of the importance of resolving the issues we face in a humble way instead of being prideful.

Proverbs 16:18 NIV
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Christ offered the ultimate example of humility as he went to the cross for our sins. Because of this sacrifice, we can be reconciled with God.

This week, invite the Lord to open your eyes to any areas where you may be prone to avoid issues or react with pride.

Set aside any distractions, close your eyes, take a few slow, deep breaths, and approach the Lord with humility. Consider recording your responses in a journal, whether digital or hard copy. It's a wonderful way to be able to look back on the adventure God has you on.

Prayer:
Lord, when frustrations come up, it is so easy to operate out of avoidance, letting the problem fester. Except that never ends well. Instead Lord, help me to be humble and surrender issues with others to you. Remind me to be confident of your love, resting in the fact that you want what is best for me. Thank you for the forgiveness you give me because of your Son. Help me extend this love and forgiveness to others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Series Theme Verse:

Psalm 37:3-4
3 Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. 4 Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.

Discussion Questions

Icebreaker: Share something excellent you learned from a father figure.

What results when issues are not resolved?

Read Ephesians 4:26-27. What do you learn from these verses?

Calvin shared four lessons from Absalom. Which of these do you need to address with God’s help?

  • Address the pain—prevent the stain.
  • Stay humble—avoid the stumble.
  • Don’t rebel against authority—choose loyalty.
  • Forgiveness is granted—consequences are planted.

How are you encouraged by the Good News that we have been reconciled to God through Christ? How can this help keep resentment from taking control?
