New Life from Tragedy

Weekend Series: Easter 2024

March 27, 1991, was a day that forever changed the community I called home. A devastating tornado struck a small community in Northwest Ohio, Nettle Lake. I remember the fear in my parents’ eyes as we went to the basement.

We were lucky, only suffering minor property damage. However, the same couldn't be said for approximately 200 families in the area, whose homes were destroyed or severely damaged.

Amidst the chaos, a miraculous story emerged. A pregnant neighbor had gone into labor, so she and her husband were at the hospital when the tornado hit. Three lives were saved that day, because there was no house left for them to come home to. It was a reminder that even from tragedy and doubt, new life can emerge.

Reflecting on this experience, I can only imagine the profound fear and confusion that Jesus' disciples felt during his arrest and crucifixion. While Jesus knew what lay ahead, his disciples were left with overwhelming uncertainty as they watched events unfold.

John 20:19
That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said.

One disciple, Thomas, wasn’t present when Jesus revealed himself to the other disciples. When he heard what happened, Thomas wrestled with doubt and said he would need concrete proof to believe.

John 20:25
They told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.”

Have you ever felt like that about Jesus? Do you want proof of his promises?

Although we do not have the luxury of physically encountering Jesus’ wounds, he won’t shy away or become angry with us if we have similar questions. He will meet us in our doubts just as he did for Thomas. (Be sure to read tomorrow's post to find out what happens.)

Instead, we are called to embrace faith in times of doubt—a faith that transcends our uncertainty and finds solace in the promise of resurrection and redemption. In times of fear and doubt, we can find comfort in the enduring presence of Christ, who offers peace amidst life's storms and the assurance of new life emerging from the depths of despair.

Questions:
When life challenges arise, how do you respond? Do you turn toward Christ or turn away from him, doubting his existence?

Do you worry about the outcome?

Next Steps:
If you struggle with doubt, consider joining a Group. Having individuals to share your doubts with can help you grow in your faith.

Remind yourself of God’s presence by bringing to mind a time when God carried you through an uncertain situation. Discuss it with a friend, your Group, or consider journaling about it.

Prayer:
Dear God, I don’t know the outcome of my life’s circumstances, but you do. Help me turn to you when I experience doubt. You guarantee that you will carry me through the storm and never forsake me. I can trust in you to bring me new life. Amen.
