It’s early January, usually a time when we think about what we would like the coming year to look like. In the weekend message, we were asked, “What would need to change to make you happy?”
Maybe the first thing that came to your mind was money, a new job, or perhaps a better family dynamic—the list could be endless. But really, what could you change? The only thing you can change for sure is yourself.
I know—bad answer! Who wants to take responsibility for changing our own circumstances? But, inevitably, things will either change for good or for bad this year. The great thing is, you get to decide!
It is challenging to change but it is possible through God. We don’t have to do it on our own. With God, we have everything we need to change. Do you believe that?
Since I’ve followed Christ, one of the most transformational verses in my life is this amazing promise found in 2 Peter:
2 Peter 1:3
By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence (emphasis added).
God has already given us everything we need to live a godly life! “How?” you ask. By knowing him, in all his glory and excellence.
By taking the focus away from ourselves and putting it on our Savior, we are more likely to find happiness. God’s power will transform our lives for the better when we make it our goal to grow closer to him, to follow him with all our hearts, and keep our focus on him above all else.
We have a role to play in God’s movement in our lives, but it takes intention. We must choose to engage in spiritual formation by spending more time getting to know God through Bible study, prayer, community with other Christ-followers, serving others, and a number of other ways.
Will 2024 be the year you make the biggest difference in your life by intentionally seeking God first?
Bottom line: think Spiritual transformation not behavior modification.
Questions:
What can you begin to do this year that will help you know God better? Do you have a regular time set aside to meet with God? If not, when could you carve out that time?
Next Steps:
Make a standing appointment with God. Start small, even just 5 minutes each day, to begin with. As you bring God to your mind, listen to what he is trying to tell you.

21 Days of Prayer Day 1—Trust
Today’s Prayer Focus: To Place my Trust in God (Psalm 62:8)
Prayer:
God, in your Word you invite me to pour out my heart to you. You are my refuge. I know that anything I think, feel, or do is ok to bring to you. Knowing you are a safe place for me, I come to you and give you everything. From what worries me to what delights me, what I hope for to what I’m afraid of, I bring it all to you because I can trust you. (Talk to God about the specific things that are on your heart today). Help me and guide me in every area. In Jesus’ name, amen.
