Yay, Thomas!

I love the apostle Thomas! He asks the questions I always hope someone else will ask…. Because I missed the explanation or instruction…. Because I have the attention span of a gnat!

I bet Thomas wasn’t the only one who didn’t understand what Jesus was getting at.

John 14:1-4
1 “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”

Which father’s house? (Joseph died years ago!)

What and where is this place, and where exactly are you going?

It’s so confusing! So Thomas asks:

John 14:5-6
5 “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”

Well, that’s not helpful if we’re being literal. Jesus, the consummate storyteller, creates images with parables that don’t always clarify the issue, but they sure do make you think!

What does it mean that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life? Through time, commitment, and faith, God has graciously provided me answers to these questions and more.

For me, Jesus has been the way to a better, more fulfilling life, which means living my life in God’s will in a consistent, obedient manner according to his truths. This is the path Jesus has given me, leading me to eternal life with the Father. And this brings me confidence and hope when life is not going the way I planned.

Amidst the highs and lows, following Jesus is always a life-changing adventure. The adventure is exciting and unexpected, fraught with challenge and opportunity. When we trust that Jesus has prepared a way for us and believe that he and his Father are working for our good, we can live each day in anticipation of all he has to teach us.

Prayer:
Jesus, my Savior, how grateful I am for you! When I think of your sacrifice, my heart is so full of love. I desire to live my life for you! You have shown me the way. You are my source of truth and have given me an abundant life. Each day, I pray that I can be used to further your kingdom on earth, that I can be your hands and feet. Give me the courage to step out for you with the gifts you have given me. In your beautiful name I pray, amen.
