Don’t Drift Away

Weekend Series: Firm Foundation

Bear with me—I have boats on my mind after a recent trip to Michigan with some really great and loving people. I think we can all agree—boats that aren't tied up to docks will float away, right? And if that dock isn’t anchored into solid ground, both the dock and boat will float away.

We’re no different. If we’re not anchored to a firm foundation, we’ll drift too.

Colossians 1:23
But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God’s servant to proclaim it.

It wasn’t long ago that I wasn't holding on to anything, and I can tell you firsthand that drifting alone in the waters is no way to live. I believed what people said and thought about me, and that was hard to keep up with. At parties, I was funnier when I wasn't myself, so I relied on courage from a can to give me strength. Eventually, I became a slave to that king in a can, choosing it over the One True King. (That's a whole other can of worms I won't get into today.) Eventually, I woke up from that nightmare and threw my lifeline to Jesus, who saved me.

Jesus is the unsinkable foundation that we must tether ourselves to through faith. I tied my faith in Christ the day I accepted him as my Savior, and I’m eternally thankful I did. If we’re tied tightly to him, not even the strongest storms can sink us. You may need to hold on for dear life, but you can be 100% certain that, even if your grip fails, he will not let you go.

If you find yourself in a situation where you’re beginning to drift, throw a line back to Jesus—our strength alone will never be enough to keep us tethered. Only Jesus can give us the peace of mind we need on those stormy days. Because with him all things are possible.

Matthew 19:26
Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.”

Questions:
Where do you place your faith when a storm comes? Have you ever felt like you were drifting and needed to re-establish your foundation in Jesus?

Next Steps:
Read through Colossians, and take in what Paul says about where our faith should be. Encourage others to do the same, and help others find this faith.

Sign up for our text campaign as we read through Colossians as a church by texting “readit” to 419-419-0707.

Prayer:
God, be with me when things get unsettling during the storms of life. Let me show others where my foundation is so they can find comfort in you as well. Remind me that you are the anchor for my soul and that I need your help not to drift away sometimes. I love you, Father. Thank you for being my courage when I need more than what I am. In Jesus’ name, amen.
